[character]: Kat.
[character history / background]: There's really not much that's known about Kat, save for what she tells in game. She's an orphan for reasons unknown. She's a runaway and her foster father was a demon who abused her almost regularly. With her ability, she found a way to escape into Limbo and it was there that she met Vergil. He helped her kill her demon foster father and Kat began working under Vergil through the order. Through him, she learned demonology, occultism and discovered she really had a natural talent for it. She's able to cast spells through clever use of her spray paint, a special compound she made from a potion she learned. Some spells take days to complete, why not make it easier?
Later on, Kat is sent by Vergil to find Dante and she does so in time to warn him that a Hunter demon followed him home from one of the demon-run night clubs in Limbo City. When Dante is pulled into Limbo by the demon, Kat is able to communicate with him to lead him to a rift in an attempt to help him escape. She's also able to throw a molotov cocktail that contained a spell to expose weaknesses at the demon, thereby enabling Dante to destroy the Hunter and escape.
She finds Dante later and eventually convinces him to return with her to Order Headquarters so he can meet her boss. The three head to Dante's childhood home, a place he doesn't even remember, and with her spray can and a stencil she made herself, she creates a portal for Dante to enter Limbo.
Expressing concern to Vergil that he won't help them, she's pleased when he decides to join their cause and is quite helpful when Dante goes after the succubus, Poison, guiding him through a part of Limbo that's trying to kill him and even manipulating gravity when Dante drops down an airshaft at the Virility factory in order to get to Poison.
It's shortly after Dante defeats Bob Barbas, demon and newscaster for Limbo City, that the Order is stormed by SWAT. Kat, understandably frightened, tries to hide. She's found by Dante who is still in Limbo and together they head off to find Vergil. They're unable to prevent Kat's friends from being gunned down. They find Vergil who is trapped in Limbo and Dante fights to keep demons from getting to them while Kat and Vergil download information from their computers.
After Vergil obtains information from their computers and starts a self-destruct program that'll bring headquarters down, Kat says there's no way for her to escape headquarters in the real world.
With SWAT seconds from breaking in, Dante instructs Kat to get down on her knees and put her hands up and to not fight back. She does so, even if she is afraid and Dante promises to come back for her.
She's shot through the left shoulder for her troubles and beaten unconscious by two police officers before being dragged off by her legs.
She's taken to Mundus, the Demon King, who tortures her further. Dante contacts Mundus and proposes a trade, Kat for Mundus' mistress and mother of his spawn, Lilith. They meet and mid-trade, Vergil kills Lilith. Mundus flies into a rage and tries pulling everyone into Limbo. With Dante's help, Kat and Vergil barely escape and Kat is treated for her injuries.
She's able to draw Vergil and Dante a map of Silver Sacks towers, explaining to them that Mundus' outburst has weakened him and now was their only chance at ending him. Dante and Vergil defeat Mundus and as the trio look out over what Limbo City now was, a combination of both Limbo and the real world where demons could no longer hide, Vergil's real goals come to light.
He wanted to rule the humans, seeing them as weak. This wasn't the freedom Kat thought he had in mind and she's heartbroken. Dante and Vergil end up fighting and in the end, Dante almost kills his brother but it's Kat who convinces him not to. When Dante says he doesn't know who he is anymore, Kat tells him he's Dante. Nothing more and nothing less.
[character abilities]: Kat is described as a spirit medium, with the ability to see and hear Limbo, able to interact with Dante wherever he may be. She uses her spraycans and stencils to create magical glyphs in the area, which serve several purposes, principal among them marking points from which Dante can escape from Limbo. She is also a proficient wiccan, able to learn and use spells with ease.
[character personality]: She is, unfortunately, naive. She's a very trusting girl and very loyal to the people she cares for and who show they care for her (Even if she misinterprets 'caring for what she can do' as concern for her well-being), but this blinds her to things on occasion. She's also clever. Resourceful. She was able to make a compound out of a potion and put it in spray cans for ease of use. She has a decent sense of morality and fights for what she believes in. She's even willing to die for what matters most to her.
I think, though, at the point I'm bringing her in, some of her world views will have been shaken enough to make her question things where before she just followed Vergil blindly, possibly out of some sense of debt to the man who rescued her from what was quite a nightmarish existence. He unnecessarily put her in harms way when he shot Lilith and walked away from her when she thought she had no way out of Order HQ.
Kat is a counter to Dante's bitter, angry, fuck society attitude. She wants things to be better. She wants freedom from the demons that have enslaved the unaware humans. She also wants to see decency in the people in her life and even after it's revealed that they've misled her or aren't what they seem, she still clings to whatever bond she had even if it is an unwise idea.
She values her relationships to a point that's almost problematic.
Take Dante almost killing Vergil, for example. Vergil made himself important to her by saving her from her demon foster father and even after knowing what Vergil's goal was, Kat stepped in and saved him. She probably shouldn't have, but he'd become one of the most important people in her life. She wouldn't have been able to just stand by and let Dante kill him.
[point in timeline you're picking your character from]: Mid-trade, just after Vergil shoots Lilith.
[journal post]:
[A new arrival has just fallen into the fountain. Apologies to anyone sitting nearby. After the initial splash, a tattoo'd hand reaches up and grabs the edge. Just one hand. Don't people usually do this with two hands? The person that follows the hand is pale, sputtering and their face is bruised and scratched. But those injuries look old. Well, older than the small lump on her forehead from her graceful entry into the City.]
God. Sh-shit. [The figure finally comes into view and...oh. There are more injuries. Bruising on what skin is visible. Her let arm hangs uselessly at her side and her shoulder is bleeding profusely. Anyone who's had experience with guns would easily recognize a bullet wound in her left shoulder.
The young girl sporting these injuries manages to drag herself out of the fountain, landing on the ground with a wet thud and a pained yell as she lands on her damaged arm. She lies there for a minute, trying to get her bearings but nothing's registering as familiar at all. Sitting up is difficult and painful as evident by the winces and faint whimpers that she tries to hold back. She looks around some more, blue eyes wide with apprehension.]
D-Dante? Vergil?...where...?
[Standing takes effort and when she starts walking, it's with a limp. She's soaked, her orange and purple hoodie clinging to every inch of her torso and her short shorts holding onto her thighs. Her hair, short in back and chest length in front, is a tangled mess. Wet strands cling to her face and she moves them carefully with her good hand, still looking around.]
Where the fuck are you two?
[The feed stays on her as she sits again, clearly not of her own volition. She rocks slightly on the spot before falling backwards in a faint. Whatever she'd just been through before here had been too much on it's own. Finding herself somewhere new without the two people she mentioned before? That was likely the straw that broke the camels back. The feed stays on her for a moment longer before switching off.]
[third person / log sample]:
The ground is cold beneath her where the SWAT member threw her, a cold that seeps into her and makes her injuries ache more. Kat is slow to sit up, wincing and gasping and favoring her left arm. It hurts and it's dead weight, all in one. The men that surround her don't care so Kat regards them with caution as she stands, keeping her movements slow and even to avoid giving them a reason to shoot her.
About fifty feet away, Dante and Vergil sit in a car with Lilith. They're making a trade. Lilith for her and she could almost cry with relief. Vergil had confused her when he left her behind as Order HQ collapsed and SWAT dragged her away. It put thoughts in her head that she wanted to ignore. She wasn't expendable. Was she? No, she couldn't be. Not if they'd come for her. Not if they were risking their lives, just to save her.
Vergil cared about her so Kat started walking carefully towards him and the car, limping and watching Lilith as she approached. Kat almost felt sorry for her, sparing her a glance as they passed each other.
Kat had barely looked up at Vergil when a shot rang out. She startled, wondering what had gone wrong when Lilith's anguished cries caught her attention. Another shot rang out and Lilith hit the ground just as Kat registered what was going on.
Vergil had shot Lilith. This wasn't part of the plan at all. SWAT reacted, firing at Dante and Vergil but Kat couldn't move. Too frozen in her shock, too horrified at the sight of dead Lilith to move.
No. No, this was wrong. Vergil shouldn't have done that. That wasn't part of the plan. That wasn't a trade. It was a trap. And now Kat was at risk again and those thoughts and doubts were filtering in, even as she heard Dante shouting at his brother. She was still in a state of shock as Dante rushed over to her, unaware of the arms that picked her up and carried her away and placed her in the car.
What had Vergil done?
